The New Dictionary of Catholic Spirituality |
Edited by Michael Downey |
|
|
Originally Published by Liturgical Press, Collegeville, Minnesota, U.S.A. In recent years there have appeared, in English, dictionaries and encyclopedias of spirituality that have proven very useful. In addition, there are several worthy dictionaries of spirituality in other languages, most notably the Dictionnaire de Spiritualité. Each of these has its own strengths and weaknesses and, no doubt, The New Dictionary of Catholic Spirituality is intended to be a dictionary that will serve as a reliable theological and pastoral resource. Because of the limits that the genre of dictionary imposes, the NDCS does not aim to provide an in-depth treatment of all matters germane to the field of spirituality. Where possible and helpful, the NDCS attends to pastoral and practical implications as well as to theological insight. Each entry in the NDCS is discrete and is not related in any structural or organizational way to the others. However, since even the longest entries in the dictionary cannot provide an exhaustive treatment of a topic, cross-references and bibliographies are provided. To expedite usage, cross-references are listed alphabetically at the end of each entry. A topical index and an index of names are also provided.

Experiencing God in a time of Crisis |
by Sara Bachelard |
|
|
There are critical times in our lives, moments of profound loss, grief
and fear in which our frameworks of sense seem to collapse and
no longer enable us to convey meaning to overwhelming events
or even to life itself. In this Sara Bachelard suggests that practice
of meditation and contemplative living may help us endure and
integrate such turning-point experiences, and bring our life and
identity into a deeper wholeness.

Religious Life at the Crossroads |
by Amy Hereford |
|
The author provides a mega-review of the history of religious life
through the ages, and then expands a thesis that community life is
at the heart of the evolution of religious life. She draws on efforts
to establish community in other faith traditions and looks to
contemporary networking movements and organizational models as
possible scenarios for how religious life might emerge in the future.
Among the younger generations of consecrated women today, her
view of the future is offered through defining characteristics that will
be the hallmarks of religious life in the 21st century.

Spirituality Seeking Theology |
by Roger Haight |
|
If you are looking for a lucid and accessible book on Christian
spirituality that is thoroughly steeped in the life, ministry, teaching,
death, and resurrection of Jesus while at the same time responsive
to the challenges of postmodernity, Roger Haight’s book is the one.
It is truly spirituality seeking theology, but no less theology seeking
spirituality. At long last, the two estranged disciplines are brought to
bear on each other; the result is a splendid contribution to Christian
thought. Only a theologian of Haight’s immense learning and
spiritual depth could produce such a work.
